Viognier
Registration Information
In France, Viognier is officially listed in the ‘Catalogue of Vine Varieties’ on the A list and is classified for wine grapes. This variety is also included in the catalogues of other European Union member states: Austria, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, and Spain.
Cultivation and Vine Characteristics
This variety is typically trained (though it can be sensitive to wind), pruned moderately long, and planted at a fairly high density. Traditionally grown in acidic terroirs, it is well-suited to sufficiently deep soils (but not too fertile) in southern regions, to mitigate the risk of drought. Its early budburst makes it susceptible to spring frosts. The bunches are small and compact, with small berries.
Wine Characteristics
Under favorable conditions, the varietal characteristics of Viognier allow for the production of very aromatic (apricot, peach, etc.), complex, and powerful wines of good quality. Viognier produces warm wines with high sugar accumulation potential: full-bodied, but sometimes lacking in acidity and occasionally presenting a slight bitterness. It can also be used to produce sweet or sparkling wines or blended with other grapes (particularly Syrah) to add finesse and aromatic complexity to red wines.
Clonal Selection in France
The three certified Viognier clones carry the numbers 642, 1042 and 1051. A conservatory of 60 or so clones was planted in the wine-growing region of Condrieu (French department of Rhône) in 2002.
