Vidal blanc
Origin
Vidal blanc was obtained by Jean-Louis Vidal (Charente, France). This interspecific hybrid results from the crossbreeding of Ugni blanc and Rayon d’Or (4986 Seibel).
Registration Information
In France, Vidal blanc is officially listed in the “Catalogue of vine varieties” since 2021 on the A list and is classified for wine grapes.
Vine Characteristics
Vidal Blanc is a fairly productive and vigorous variety with an erect growth habit. It is sensitive to winter cold, spring frosts, and coulure but has a good ability to recover after frost damage. Depending on the planting location, Vidal Blanc may also be prone to potassium or magnesium deficiencies. The bunches are medium to long, compact, and sometimes winged. The small berries have a neutral flavor.
Wine Characteristics
This variety produces acidic white wines with relatively high alcohol content and a slight bitterness, though they are not very aromatic. Vidal Blanc wines are suitable for distillation. In Canada, the variety is also used to produce high-quality ice wines.
Susceptibility to Diseases and Pests
Vidal blanc is not very sensitive to disease, especially downy mildew, and it performs very well against black rot.
