Sangiovese
Origin
This variety, traditionally grown in Corsica, originates from Tuscany, Italy, where it is known as Sangiovese.
Registration Information
In France, Sangiovese is officially listed on the “A” list in the “Catalogue of vine varieties.” It is also recognized in the catalogues of other EU Member States, including Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Malta, and Romania.
Vine Characteristics
Sangiovese exhibits moderate vigor and early budburst. It thrives when pruned short in gobelet or cordon. This variety is well-suited to drought conditions and performs well in low-fertility soils. The bunches are medium-sized, and the berries are large.
Wine Characteristics
Sangiovese produces full-bodied, fruity wines that develop spicy aromas and are well-suited to aging. These wines are characterized by great finesse and balance, with color intensity decreasing as yields rise. This variety is also excellent for high-quality rosé wines.
Susceptibility to Diseases and Pests
Sangiovese is susceptible to flavescence dorée but has moderate resistance to powdery mildew and low sensitivity to botrytis.
