Pinot gris
Registration Information
In France, Pinot gris is officially listed in the ‘Catalogue of Vine Varieties’ on the A list and is classified for wine grapes. This variety is also included in the catalogues of other European Union member states: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Spain.
Cultivation and Vine Characteristics
Pinot gris is quite vigorous but not highly productive. This variety is well-suited to northern regions, thriving in deep limestone soils with relatively dry and well-exposed terroirs. It is not very sensitive to winter cold and typically recovers well, with good fruit production following spring frost. The bunches and berries are small to very small in size.
Wine Characteristics
Pinot gris can produce wines of great finesse—powerful, full-bodied, and aromatic. It has a high sugar accumulation potential and low to moderate acidity. Pinot gris wines typically have a pronounced yellow color and distinct aromas compared to Pinot blanc.
Clonal Selection in France
The seven certified Pinot gris clones are numbered 52, 53, 457, 1237, 1238, 1329, and 1344. A conservatory collection of around 200 clones was planted in Alsace in 1984. Two other conservatories were established: one with 9 clones in the Champagne wine-growing region and another with 14 clones in the French department of Côte-d’Or in 1993.
