Lucie Kuhlman
Vine Characteristics
Lucie Kuhlmann is a vigorous and productive grape variety in Nova Scotia, known for its early ripening and excellent winter hardiness. A cross related to Marechal Foch, it consistently ripens to 20 Brix or higher, though it often has high acidity and may exhibit herbaceous notes. The variety produces medium-sized, tightly packed bunches, which are more prone to bunch rot and powdery mildew compared to some other varieties. Despite these challenges, it ripens reliably, offering a distinctive character in the wine it produces.
Wine Characteristics
Lucie Kuhlmann wines can stand alone or be incorporated into blends, offering versatility in winemaking. While the wine may sometimes lack body, this can be improved through cluster thinning before harvest. It tends to age well in oak, enhancing its characteristics. The wines are known for their vibrant color and softer tannin structure, with a bold, fruity profile. Expect rich, full-flavored dry reds with berry aromas and subtle smoky notes. On the palate, the wines are often smooth with a hint of spice in the finish.
