Itasca
Cultivation and Vine Characteristics
Itasca is a cold-hardy white hybrid grape released by the University of Minnesota in 2017. It shows moderate vigor, with clusters that are medium in size and somewhat cylindrical, carrying medium berries. Bud break tends to be early, with harvest typically in mid-September in cooler regions. The vine has proven capable of withstanding extreme cold, surviving temperatures as low as –35 °C with strong bud survival. Its growth habit is open and manageable, and it responds well to spur pruning. Many growers prefer high-wire systems to balance its slightly downward growth tendency and to achieve reliable yields.
Wine Characteristics
Itasca is well suited for dry white wines, offering balanced fruit chemistry that requires less adjustment than many other cold-climate varieties. Musts typically reach 23–26 °Brix with moderate acidity, giving wines a bright yet rounded structure. Aromas are often described as pear, melon, gooseberry, quince, and citrus, with subtle honey or mineral notes. In favorable vintages, the style has been compared to Sauvignon Blanc or Chenin Blanc, producing clean, expressive wines that work well as varietals or in blends.
Susceptibility to Diseases and Pests
One of Itasca’s greatest strengths is its natural disease resistance. It shows high resilience against downy mildew, powdery mildew, and foliar phylloxera, and has performed well with reduced spray programs.
