Gamaret
Origin
This variety was obtained in 1970 at the Changins station in Switzerland and results from a cross between Gamay and Reichensteiner.
Registration Information
In France, Gamaret is officially listed in the “Catalogue of vine varieties” on list A. This variety is also listed in the Italian catalogue.
Vine Characteristics
Gamaret is a moderately vigorous grape variety with consistent fertility and a semi-erect to horizontal growth habit. It performs best with short pruning and requires training. The variety is somewhat sensitive to drought, so in conditions prone to water stress, careful selection of rootstock is essential. Gamaret grape clusters are small to medium in size with low to moderate compactness. The berries are also small to medium.
Wine Characteristics
This variety has an average to good potential for sugar accumulation, resulting in wines with medium acidity. Gamaret is well suited for whole-bunch vinification, and when fully ripe, it produces well-balanced, spicy wines with intense color and a firm tannic structure, ideal for aging.
Susceptibility to Diseases and Pests
Gamaret is not very sensitive to black rot and Botrytis, but is somewhat sensitive to downy mildew and powdery mildew as well as Flavescence dorée and Esca.
