Castel
Cultivation and Vine Characteristics
Castel is known for its vigor and productivity, with reports indicating yields of up to six tons per acre. The vine exhibits excellent cold hardiness, tolerating temperatures as low as -30°C, and shows resistance to common grape diseases such as powdery and downy mildew. It ripens early, typically requiring 85-90 days from flowering to harvest, making it suitable for shorter growing seasons. The vine can be trained using various systems, including Vertical Shoot Positioning (VSP) and hanging curtain methods.
Wine Characteristics
Wines produced from Castel grapes are deeply colored and full-bodied, often exhibiting earthy flavors. They are generally high in acidity, which contributes to their aging potential. In British Columbia, Castel has been used to produce varietal wines and blends, including sparkling wines. Tasting notes have highlighted intense color and attractive earthy flavors, characteristic of hybrid grape varieties.
Susceptibility to Diseases and Pests
Castel demonstrates good resistance to common grapevine diseases, including powdery mildew and downy mildew. Its robust nature reduces the need for chemical interventions, making it an attractive option for sustainable viticulture practices.
